Catio - the new cat enclosures

I recently had an incident in which Reggi, my indoor-outdoor cat, was attacked by another cat. Aside from being very traumatic and painful to the cat, it resulted in a very expensive vet bill. 

I’ve noticed that since he has not been able to go outside, he has become much more lethargic, easily irritated, skittish, aggressive, and just want to eat... Sound like some people you might know? He misses the stimulation of being the athlete jumping over fences, hunting in the brush, and going back to his roots in the wild. 

I love my cats, but do not want them in jeopardy.

Cats that are only inside tend to become lazy, neurotic, or destructive.

Left with a dilemma I recently put a catio on my deck. I bought the catio prefab, it came in 2 large boxes and needed to be put together. It was a pretty big project, I’m so grateful for the help of my good friends Chuck and Vicky, I could not have done it without them. It was definitely a three person job, and it took two days.

It won’t be the same as running around outside in the fields, but it’s much safer. For now, they are protesting and want to run free, but in time we will all be happier.

What is a Catio? You may ask. 

A catio (a combination  of “cat” and “patio”) is an enclosed outdoor space designed to allow cats to enjoy fresh air and outdoor sights safely. 

Catios have become very popular in the past few years. 

It can be a small window box, a large screened-in porch, or a multi-level structure with climbing shelves, tunnels, and perches. 

With so much wildlife coming into our neighborhoods, outdoor pets are in danger. 

Catios protect cats from predators, traffic, and other dangers while allowing them to experience the outdoors. They’re mentally stimulated by smelling all the wonderful aromas and seeing nature. 

The ability to go outside revives the desire to move and be active. 

Catios are also used for other types of pets, like dogs, rabbits, ferrets, or birds. 

Some people build elaborate play structures in their homes to occupy their furry friends, and if you have the space outside, a catio is a nice option as well. 

Whatever way you choose to keep your pets safe, happy, and healthy, they are your responsibility and family. Enjoy the unconditional love.
