We love our Monday holidays and 3 day weekends, but what is this one really about?
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is an official day of service and celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s actual birthday is 1/15/29. He would have been 93.
Could you imagine what he would have done if he had not been brutally assassinated on 4/4/1968?
He preached and lived by a non-violence philosophy. He brought peace, love, hope, and positive changes.
He was far ahead of his time. Thank God!
He was a true Patriot
Martin Luther King Jr. became the central personality in the Negro’s struggle for human rights.
He said in his speech in 1955, “Thou shalt not requite violence with violence.”
Unfortunately, His efforts to bring peace and justice to the world were met with such negative opposition.
He was jailed 29 times, his house was firebombed, and he was stabbed. In 1974 his mother was also shot and killed.
In 1963, in front of a crowd of over 250,000 people, more than twice the amount expected, He delivered the "I Have A Dream" speech. One of the most iconic moments of the 20th century.
His accomplishments were rewarded when he received the Nobel Peach prize in 1964, "for his non-violent struggle for civil rights for the Afro-American population".
His acceptance speech is eloquently delivered and worth a listen.
In memory and celebration of his efforts, let's continue to make our country a better place for all people regardless of race, age, gender, nationality, status, or religious and political beliefs.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today."
We need more people in power like him.
